Welcome to the new Hornby Island Archives website. We are experiencing a period of unprecedented enthusiasm for learning about and preserving our island community's history. A main focus has been photographs and stories and we have enjoyed sharing these locally through a series of exhibitions in such public places as our Community Hall, School and Co-op Store. Now we are expanding our "exhibition space" to the internet in order to share our rich history with you!

Celebrating Hilary Brown: Social Activist

Hilary Brown resided on Hornby Island from 1937 until her death in 2007. Throughout her life she was actively engaged internationally in women's equality issues and the peace movement from World War Two to the present. On a local level, Hilary defined the term "grass roots activism" and was involved in initiating nearly every community facility that now exists on Hornby Island, including the hub of the community - The Co-op Store. This exhibit will consist of photographs from Brown's life, historical Co-op photos & stories by and about Hilary Brown. It will be the first "Exhibit" showing on our new website and will be posted at the end of September 2008.

This exhibit is being held in honour of BC Women's History Month.

ANNOUCEMENT:
The Hornby Island Co-op Store is pleased to announce the creation of "The Hilary Brown Award". This award will be given yearly to one school child and one adult for activities that benefit the community. It will be given in the name of Hilary Brown and is intended to honour the memory of her contributions to the community and to encourage and recognize the many acts of "social activism: undertaken by community members.
